Types of bird guard
The right guard depends on the pot and appliance:
- Crow guards with top covers for round terracotta pots
- Mesh-sided cowls for situations needing a fuller enclosure
- Bird guards built into stove terminals for lined flues
Signs birds are getting in
Twigs or straw in the grate, scratching or chirping in the chimney breast, droppings on the hearth, or birds regularly landing on the pot are all signs. Smoke coming back into the room can mean the flue is partly blocked and should be checked before use.
