What can get into an open chimney pot
An uncapped pot can let in:
- Birds and crows looking for a nesting spot
- Twigs and nesting materials
- Rain falling straight down the flue
- Leaves and debris
How to check your chimney
Stand across the street or in the garden and look at the pot. If there's nothing on top, it's uncapped. Take a photo on your phone and send it to us on WhatsApp — we'll tell you what we see and whether a cowl would help.
Is it always a problem?
Not always. Some chimneys are fine as they are. But if the pot is open and the chimney isn't regularly used, it's worth considering protection. The right choice depends on the flue and appliance.
